HOOVER — Last year’s Brenda Ladun Conquer Cancer Run raised around $70,000 for cancer research, but event organizers think the event can do even better this year.

“The more the better,” said Mary Frances Colley with the American Cancer Society, laughing. “I guess I would say a reasonable goal is $80,000 or $85,000.”

This year’s event is set for 8 a.m. March 9 at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. The event, which includes a 5K and a 1 mile fun run, raises funds for cancer research and patient support groups.

Ladun, a television anchor with ABC 33/40, is a two-time survivor of breast cancer. However, she champions this event because it supports those suffering from any type of cancer, Colley said.

“(Ladun) really appreciates being able to support anyone who has struggled with any type of cancer,” Colley said.

Last year’s event saw 625 runners, but organizers are hoping for 750 this year, Colley said.

She said this year’s event is also special because 2013 marks the 100th birthday of the American Cancer Society. The organization has set a goal of saving 400 lives per day, Colley said.

“We’re hoping to save 400 lives every day from cancer, so we’re hoping to celebrate 400 more birthdays every day,” she said.

The event will also feature numerous vendors, including about 20 food vendors, plus inflatables, the Tumblebus and the Gamin Truck for children. St. Vincent’s will offer $99 mammograms, as well as free skin cancer screenings, blood pressure screenings, physical therapy consultations, massages for runners and hand massages for survivors.
