Saint Leo evens series with Falcons with 5-2 victory

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The University of Montevallo baseball team fell on the road at Saint Leo 5-2 in the second game of a three-game series Feb. 2.
After picking up a 7-2 win over the Lions on opening day, the Lions scored five runs on nine hits to even the series heading into the finale Sunday, Sept. 3. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. CST.
Sophomore Zack Willoughby led Montevallo (1-1) at the plate as he finished 2-for-4 with a double, the Falcons’ lone extra-base hit in the game, and drove in one run.
Senior Andrew Hill went 1-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run. Sophomore Vinny Rodriguez went 1-for-4 at the plate in his first action of the season after missing the Falcons’ season opener due to an injury.
Senior Austin Dubberly finished 1-for-4 at the plate and scored a run. Junior Todd Thompson also went 1-for-4 at the plate. Junior Will Fulmer also scored a run.
Junior Edward Brandsema started on the mound and took the loss after giving up three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Freshman Jake Christensen allowed one earned run on two hits with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings in relief in his first action with the Falcons. Fellow freshman Brandon Marshall pitched two hitless innings to close out the game in his first appearance at Montevallo.
Saint Leo took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Bobby Twitty doubled down the left-field line and came around to score on a RBI single through the right side of the infield by Taed Moses.
The Lions went up 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning following a solo homer by Chris Newcomb.
Montevallo cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth inning. Fulmer reached on a walk, advanced to third base on a single by Rodriguez and came around to score on Willoughby’s RBI single to center field.
Saint Leo pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 advantage. Twitty doubled to right center before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Vitale in the inning in addition to a run by Moses, who reached on a single and scored on a Montevallo error.
The Lions went up 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Moses led off with an infield single and scored on a RBI single to left field by Ryan Brnovich.
Montevallo added a run in the top of the seventh inning to account for the final margin. Dubberly led off with a single down the left-field line before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Hill.
