Dear Editor,

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a Presidential Proclamation that set aside May 15 as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and the week of May 15 as National Police Week.

People from across the globe will travel to Washington, D.C. to honor those in law enforcement and remember those who have died in the line of duty.

This year alone, 68 law enforcement officers have died while serving; 33 from gunshot wounds.

Please take time during this week to thank the law enforcement officers who protect our lives and property each day and the families of these officers who worry each day if their loved ones will return home safely.

Tie a blue ribbon to your car antenna as a reminder of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and in honor of those men and women who serve their communities 24/7, year in and year out.

Consider making a donation to C.O.P. S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) or the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund.

Our family will not be in attendance this year as the trial of Bart Wayne Johnson, accused murderer of Philip M. Davis is ongoing in Shelby County.

We ask you to remember Philip and other fallen officers who gave all in service to their communities and give those who continue to serve the respect they deserve.
