Pelham native Hunter Stovall was recently invited to the USA Baseball 14-and-under National team trials in Fort Myers, Fla.
Stovall was the only player from Alabama out of over 300 kids competing in the team trials. Stovall was placed on a team called the Florida Red Sox, which played at the Boston Red Sox’s spring training facility and at the historic Terry Park. Players were individually evaluated by the USA staff and played games in front of scouts.
Stovall made the short list of the top 15 players at the trials and was considered the top shortstop at the trials by his coach, Ben Grieve. Stovall had over 45 putouts without making an error on the week.
Stovall also pitched and played catcher during the trials. He batted better than .600 against some of the best 14-and-under pitchers in the nation during the tryout session.
Stovall is the first cousin of former Hokes Bluff High School stand out Tyler Stovall, who is currently pitching in the Atlanta Braves organization. Stovall is a member of the Riverchase Middle School baseball team, which won the Shelby County championship this past season.
