Championship streak ends for Spain Park golf team

The Spain Park High School boys’ golf team saw its streak of three Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A championships snapped as the Jaguars finished third in the state tournament May 9-10 at Robert Trent Jones’ Magnolia Cove course in Mobile.
The Jaguars carded a team total 32-over par 600 in the tournament, including an 11-over par 295 in the first round.
Michael Johnson, an Auburn men’s golf signee who captured the AHSAA Class 6A individual championship a year ago, led Spain Park as he fired a two-day total of 2-under par 140.
Johnson shot a 2-under par 69 in the opening round before finishing the tournament with an even par 71 in the final round. Johnson was one of only three players under par in the tournament.
Daniel Schroder finished in a two-way tie for 12th in individual standings with his two-round total of 7-over par 149. Riley Smith finished in a three-way tie for 22nd overall in individual standings with his 13-over par 155.
Robby Prater, the 2009 AHSAA Class 6A low-medalist, finished 26th in individual standings with his 16-over par 158. Vasili Kartos rounded out the group of Jaguars with his 19-over par 161, which placed him in a two-way tie for 29th in individual standings.
