Sidewalks are a common sight in communities, but the town of Harpersville has been deprived of them. That is, until now.

Harpersville is in the process of laying down sidewalks. Construction for the sidewalks began July 14 and should end in early November.

The town applied for a grant to fund the project more than three years ago. The transportation enhancement program of the Alabama Department of Transportation recently approved the project, giving the town $186,000 towards constructing sidewalks.

Matthew Burgess, the engineer for the project, said the contractor is doing an excellent job.

“It’s going well,” Burgess said. “They are on schedule.”

The sidewalks will begin at J.W. Donahoo Park and go down to U.S. 280. Then they will go through Sweet Street and onto Alabama 25.

Harpersville Mayor Theo Perkins said the sidewalks begin at the park because it was recently renovated. Perkins also wants to promote walking.

“We wanted to make it safer for those walking to town,” Perkins said.

Harpersville City Clerk Jackie Ingram said the city is looking forward to the completion of the project.

“We’re very excited about it,” Ingram said. “It’s going to give Harpersville a different look.”
