Facing life’s struggles without a tight support group can be difficult. Lillian Jones knows that and doesn’t want recently divorced or widowed individuals to feel alone.
“I myself am divorced, so if I can help someone going through that then it helps me too,” Jones said.
Jones and Shelia Reed recently began a new ministry at Kingwood Church for single men and women above the age of 30.
Single Source provides these individuals with a specialized Bible study each Sunday morning. It also offers them a chance to build new relationships.
“We need to reach people outside the church and let them know we care about them,” Jones said. “In a lot of churches there are plenty of ministries for the very young and seniors. It’s the people in between who get lost.”
Reed just “wants to love on people.” She has been married for more than 20 years but felt called to help with the single ministry because she thinks it’s easy for these members of the church to feel left out.
“I have a heart for this ministry because I want people to develop friendships within the church and find a place where they belong,” Reed said. “They may not have a significant other, but they still have a lot to give.
Reed said she wants singles to know that God loves them and can use them to do his work.
Members of the ministry showed their love for the community early on by volunteering time with Habitat for Humanity. The group also plans to gather for outside activities such as bowling, going to the park or sharing a dinner.
