Montevallo women’s basketball falls to UAH in home opener

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a hot-shooting UAH squad in a 90-74 loss to the Chargers in its home opener Nov. 14 at BankTrust Arena.
UAH, a former Gulf South Conference rival, shot 41 percent from 3-point range in the victory and knocked down 23-of-30 attempts from the charity stripe in the second half.
Sophomore Taylor Beverly led the Falcons (0-3) with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor and 2-of-2 attempts from the free-throw line. Beverly also grabbed six rebounds.
Junior Shay Bonner contributed 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe. Senior Zena Nasiloski added a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Senior Alex Strickland and freshman Jacquelyn Thompson finished with nine points each, while senior Trena Moore-Smith chipped in eight points and four assists.
Junior Alexsis Brown dished out a team-high eight assists.
UAH led by as many as four points in the opening minutes before the Falcons responded with a 8-0 run to take a 17-13 advantage following a jumper by Beverly with 11:22 remaining in the opening half.
The Chargers knocked down three 3-point baskets in a four minute stretch late in the first half and led by as many as 12 points before carrying a 43-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Montevallo cut the deficit to six points twice in the second half, the last time at 50-44, following a layup by Bonner with 15:39 left in the game. However, the Chargers slowly stretched their lead back to double-digits and led by as many as 19 points down the stretch.
The Falcons return to action Nov. 17 with a non-conference game on the road at the University of North Alabama. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
