After 15 months of work, Indian Springs Village finally has curbside recycling service.

Mayor Steve Zerkis said he was unsure how many of the town’s residents had signed up, but more than 300 signed up last fall when the program, provided by Waste Management, Inc., was announced.

“I do know more people are signing up since it started,” Zerkis said. “Whatever we hit, we had enough for them to say yes.”

Zerkis said the recycling carts with their bright yellow tops were delivered at the beginning of August, and Aug. 5 was the first day for pickup.

“Initially, they were talking about doing it twice a month,” Zerkis said. “(Waste Management) informed us in August that they would do it weekly, which is even better.”

The recycling pickup service costs $5.06 a month.

Zerkis said town officials worked hard to get the service so the town could continue with its environmentally friendly mission.

“We had our own internal recycling program for a number of years, and it was basically volunteers that were picking up aluminum and that sort of thing. It got a bit much to handle,” he said. “This town has a reputation of being green. We’re not targeting big development or commercial development. We’re more focused on keeping the green space that we have.”
