MORROW, Ga. – The University of Montevallo women’s soccer team dropped its second match in a row in heartbreaking fashion Sept. 26 following a 2-0 loss on the road at Peach Belt Conference foe Clayton State University.
Following a similar loss against non-conference foe Valdosta State University after failing to convert a penalty kick late in the contest in their most recent match, the Falcons (4-4-1 overall, 1-2 in Peach Belt Conference) once again had an opportunity to net the equalizer in the final minutes against the Lakers. However, a shot by freshman Jade Pennock on a free kick in front of the Clayton State goal couldn’t find its way past a wall of defenders.
Clayton State took the deflection and worked it ahead for an insurance goal, the second in the contest by Natalia Valentine, in 85th minute to seal the victory.
Valentine netted her first goal in the 65th minute of the match.
Montevallo junior goalkeeper Kaitlin Thomas finished with five saves in the match.
The Falcons, who are ranked No. 9 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll, return to action Sept. 29 with a home match at 1 p.m. against Peach Belt Conference foe Lander University at Varsity Field.
