NORTH SHELBY — The North Shelby Baptist Church is hosting a baby shower March 6, but the shower isn’t for a church member.
Rather, the shower is for needy expectant mothers and mothers of infants who are part of the Sav-A-Life Shelby ministry, which provides free pregnancy care and help after a baby is born.
Grace Presbyterian Church, Westwood Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Pelham and Generation Church are also sponsoring the shower.
Sonja Bennett, leader of the Women on a Mission ministry at North Shelby Baptist Church, said the church decided to host the baby shower to promote Sav-A-Life’s message of redemption and faith.
“Our women’s ministry team met last summer and made our plans for the year, and we decided this was something we’d like to pull together,” she said. “We wanted to work with other churches. We didn’t want it to be just our church, we wanted it to be a community effort.”
Bennett said Sav-A-Life needs diapers most of all, but the organization also needs baby wipes, blankets, clothes for infants 0-12 months, bottles, new baby seats, strollers and baby furniture.
“Their number one item that they need is diapers,” Bennett said. “That’s how they help new moms most, by giving them diapers.”
She said the baby shower has gotten a great reaction from the community.
“We have not only these five churches, but numerous other churches and individuals are participating,” she said. “We’ve sent information to probably 75 other churches now. It has been a good outreach. Part of our goal specifically is to educate people about the mission of Sav-A-Life Shelby along with providing these items.”
The shower will be in the North Shelby Baptist Church fellowship hall from 2-4 p.m.
