Students from the University of Montevallo will partner with FocusFirst to conduct vision screenings for 812 children Sept. 12-14.

A class of 30 UM students will volunteer with FocusFirst to conduct vision screenings in areas across Jefferson and Shelby County. These students are part of a service-learning college course led by University of Montevallo professor Dr. Susan Culpepper, according to a release from FocusFirst.

Since 2004, more than 2,300 students attending 23 Alabama colleges, universities and high schools have screened over 145,000 children in Alabama for eye diseases and disorders as part of their affiliation with FocusFirst – a signature project of Impact Alabama: A Student Service Initiative, the release stated.

Impact Alabama, supported in large part by an AmeriCorps grant, is the state’s first nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and implementing substantive service-learning projects in coordination with select universities and colleges throughout the state, the release stated.

The screenings will take place at the following Shelby County locations:

-Sept. 12: 9 a.m. – Ready Set Grow, 110 Highway 337, Chelsea.

-Sept. 13: 9 a.m. – Noah’s Park Daycare, 61 Weatherly Club Drive, Alabaster.

-Sept. 14: 9 a.m. – Kindercare, 1820 Southpark Drive, Hoover.
