Margaret Clark is the new regent of the David Lindsay Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), which was chartered in Montevallo in 1927.
The chapter today has 50 Daughters from all over Shelby County, who meet at the Columbiana Public Library the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. from September through April, except January.
Margaret and husband Loy live on Lay Lake in Shelby Shores. The Clarks are very involved with the Homeowners Association of Shelby Shores and Margaret with the Book Club of Shelby Shores. She recently retired from thirty-two years of teaching.
The Clarks love to travel — especially by car. One of their most memorable trips was driving to Alaska. This love of driving prepared them for their mutual volunteer work with Shelter Partners of the Shelby Humane Society that provides adoptable pets to the Northeast where there is a shortage of puppies and dogs. The Clarks drive non-stop 23 hours transporting 30-50 dogs for adoption. There is always a wait list for these much wanted pets.
“The Humane Society prepares us well for how to transport these animals,” said Clark. “They stay in the van in their cages the entire time and we do not stop except for quick driver changes and to check for their water. The directors and staff are waiting for us. The shelter sends bios of the puppies coming and within a week they are always adopted. More than 5,600 dogs have been adopted in five years to loving, happy families. It is the perfect fit for a volunteer job for my husband and me.”
Clark’s lifelong hobby of genealogy developed from her mother’s love of their roots. She deeply believes in the objectives of the DAR of patriotism and respect for our veterans and looks forward to her years as regent.
“I truly believe that I have something to contribute in this stage of my life,” said Clark.
Anyone who can prove lineal descent to a Revolutionary War patriot is eligible for the DAR. If interested in joining, please contact the chapter’s registrar Judith Arthur at jkennedya@bellsouth.net.
