I joined the National Fine Arts Scrabble Tournament held July 27 at Christian Life Fellowship in Calera and learned a new word. “Ki” is the circulating life energy that in Chinese philosophy is thought to be inherent in all things.
The tournament was a fundraiser for CLF’s youth drama team, Encounter, to attend the Assemblies of God National Fine Arts competition held in Louisville, Ky.
The group competed in the state competition held at Kingwood Church, where drama members Sydney and Vanna Bayer won second place with their skit, “Legacy,” a portrayal of their mother’s life prior to a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Micah Davis, Charles Holcombe, Tyler Mills, Hannah Mills, Sydney Bayer, Vanna Bayer and Kaitlyn Tornatore won first place in state with “The One.” At the national competition it scored superior, placing them in the nation’s top 20; all other entries scored excellent. The set is a typical high school with kids facing the normal pressures of life. The theme is everyone matters to God and we are responsible to work with him to help those in need.
Children’s Pastor Lorna Davis leads the drama team. Davis said performances are age appropriate to reach all individuals. “We perform at places like Celebrate Recovery, a program that helps recovering addicts, and kids crusade. We, also, compete in national competitions, which is why we are having this fundraiser.”
Tournament organizer Cindy Hildebrand said this was the first and definitely not the last Scrabble tournament fundraiser. “There wasn’t a whole lot of people participating, but we certainly had a lot of fun. We will do this again and hopefully next time we can give gift cards and prizes in addition to trophies.”
A celebration has been planned for Christian Life Fellowship’s 10-year anniversary. An outdoor concert will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, and a celebration on Sunday. The community is invited to join them for a weekend of food, fun and fellowship.
Mark Davis is CLF’s lead pastor. The church is located at 7374 U.S. 31, for directions call 668-3000. Services are Sundays, 10 a.m., and Wednesdays, 6:45 p.m. Find them on the web, clfcalera.com and on Facebook.
