High school basketball roundup: Warriors top rival Panthers

PELHAM —  The Thompson High School girls’ basketball team jumped out to a commanding lead early against rival Pelham and led throughout in a 43-25 win over the Panthers in a Class 6A, Area 10 contest Jan. 18.

KaDeisha Stowes led the Warriors (9-9 overall, 1-2 in Class 6A, Area 10) with a game-high 19 points.

Kat Cingoranelli added 14 points. Aisa Anchrum chipped in four points. Hannah Oglesby, Rachel Lawley and Kristin Wilson contributed two points each.

Erin Whitman led Pelham (6-10 overall, 0-3 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 11 points.

Sydney Days added eight points. Jamekia Dawson contributed four points. Kristan Cordrey finished with two points.

Wilson hit a jumper midway through the second quarter to cap a 16-2 run by the Warriors to open the contest.

Pelham closed the first half with an 8-0 run, capped by a Dawson layup, to cut the lead to six points before Stowes drove in for a basket with four seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Thompson an 18-10 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Warriors extended their lead to as many as 20 points in the second half at 34-14 following a free throw by Stowes with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Oak Mountain drops area contest against Hoover

The Oak Mountain High School girls’ basketball team fell to Hoover 66-20 in a Class 6A, Area 10 contest Jan. 18.

Mackenzie Garmany led the Eagles (15-5 overall, 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 10) with seven points. Garmany also grabbed three rebounds.

Hannah Griffin added six points on two 3-point baskets. Maegen McDanal finished with five points and four rebounds.

Hoover, which led throughout the contest, opened the game with a 20-2 run.

Spain Park falls to Mountain Brook in area contest

The Spain Park High School girls’ basketball team fell to Mountain Brook 54-41 in a Class 6A, Area 12 contest Jan. 18.

Ashley Gaston led the Jaguars (14-11 overall, 2-2 in Class 6A, Area 12) with eight points.

Whitney Gulledge and Kathryn Boswell added seven points each. Kelsie Williams contributed six points.

Colby Ryan finished with four points and four rebounds. Jasmine Moore led Spain Park with eight rebounds.

Briarwood Christian downs Chelsea in area contest

The Briarwood Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated Chelsea 54-33 in a Class 5A, Area 7 contest Jan. 18.

Abbie Cutcliffe led the Lions (20-3 overall, 5-0 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 14 points.

Hannah Wainwright added 10 points and eight rebounds. Meredith Botes contributed six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Amanda Mock led Chelsea (7-14 overall, 1-5 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 13 points.

Calera falls to Tarrant in overtime

The Calera High School girls’ basketball team fell to Tarrant 57-54 in overtime in a Class 4A, Area 8 contest Jan. 18.

A’Kia Harris led the Eagles (2-11 overall, 1-4 in Class 4A, Area 8 ) with 25 points.

Jennifer Hobby added nine points. Brandi Rappe contributed six points.

Indian Springs tops Clay County in area game

The Indian Springs School girls’ basketball team defeated Clay County 45-33 in a Class 3A, Area 8 contest Jan. 18.

Andrea Mayo led Indian Springs (6-9 overall, 4-1 in Class 3A, Area 8 ) with a game-high 20 points.

Eugenia Hofammann added 13 points in the victory.

Cornerstone Christian falls to Chambers Academy

The Cornerstone Christian School girls’ basketball team fell to Chambers Academy 55-49 in an AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1 contest Jan. 18.

Kailey Goodwin led the Chargers (3-9 overall, 0-2 in AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) with 14 points.

Destiny Dillard added 10 points. Megan Atchison finished with eight points.

Evangel Christian defeats First Assembly

The Evangel Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated First Assembly Christian School 48-18 in an Alabama Christian Sports Conference contest Jan. 18.

Abby Letson led the Lightning (12-0 overall, 9-0 in Alabama Christian Sports Conference) with a game-high 18 points.

Katherine Stockman added 12 points. Rainey Ketcham contributed 11 points and a team-high seven assists.

Oak Mountain downs Hoover in area contest

The Oak Mountain High School boys’ basketball team defeated Hoover 54-29 in a Class 6A, Area 10 contest Jan. 18.

Garrett Cosgrove led the Eagles (11-9 overall, 2-1 in Class 6A, Area 10) with 18 points. Cosgrove also grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists.

Heath Quinn added 11 points and seven rebounds. Taylor Kral handed out five assists in the victory.

Spain Park edges Mountain Brook in area game

The Spain Park High School boys’ basketball team edged Mountain Brook 63-62 in a Class 6A, Area 12 contest Jan. 18.

Rembert Martin led the Jaguars (17-7 overall, 3-1 in Class 6A, Area 12) with 21 points.

Robby Prater added 15 points. Mitchell Holt contributed 14 points in the victory.

Briarwood Christian edges Chelsea in area contest

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ basketball team edged Chelsea 35-33 in a Class 5A, Area 7 contest Jan. 18.

Jason Laatsch, who hit the game-winning basket in the final seconds, led the Lions (19-6 overall, 3-2 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 11 points.

Jake Ganus led Chelsea (10-12 overall, 1-4 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 12 points.

D.D. Washington contributed 10 points.

Calera pounds Tarrant in area contest

The Calera High School boys’ basketball team defeated Tarrant 96-50 in a Class 4A, Area 8 contest Jan. 18.

Deondre Haynes led the Eagles (14-5 overall, 4-1 in Class 4A, Area 8 ) with 20 points.

Jeremy Hyde added 12 points. Howard Morris contributed 11 points. Blayne Sumrall and Titus Adams finished with 10 points each.

Indian Springs defeats Clay County in area game

The Indian Springs School boys’ basketball team defeated Clay County 55-47 in a Class 3A, Area 8 contest Jan. 18.

Alex Szasz led Indian Springs (9-5 overall, 3-2 in Class 3A, Area 8 ) with 11 points.

Hart Wilson added 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory.

Westminster downs Shades Mountain in area contest

The Westminster School at Oak Mountain boys’ basketball team defeated Shades Mountain Christian School 61-44 in a Class 1A, Area 8 contest Jan. 18.

Jeffrey Stanford led the Knights (10-9 overall, 4-2 in Class 1A, Area 8 ) with 21 points.

Jake Doggett added 17 points in the victory.

Coosa Valley edges Lyman Ward in area game

The Coosa Valley Academy boys’ basketball team edged Lyman Ward 38-34 in an AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) contest Jan. 18.

John Bullen led the Rebels (7-10 overall, 4-0 in AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) with 17 points.

Sam Bullard added eight points in the victory.

Cornerstone Christian tops Chambers Academy in area contest

The Cornerstone Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated Chambers Academy 70-47 in an AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1 contest Jan. 18.

Hagan Joiner led the Chargers (4-8 overall, 4-0 in AISA Class 1A, Region 2 — Area 1) with 23 points. Joiner also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Kendall Moore added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Clayton Halbert chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds in the victory.

Evangel Christian defeats First Assembly

The Evangel Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated First Assembly Christian School 82-74 in an Alabama Christian Sports Conference contest Jan. 18.

DaJon Townson led the Lightning (11-1 overall, 9-1 in Alabama Christian Sports Conference) with 22 points.

Aaron Walker and Andrew Frazier contributed 14 points each in the victory.

Hope Christian edges New Life

The Hope Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated New Life Christian School 65-61 on Jan. 18.

Terrance Moore led the Eagles (9-7) with 21 points. Moore also finished with a team-high 13 steals and four assists.

Blake Thomas added 13 points. Caleb Douglas contributed 12 points and a team-high 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Pete Thomason chipped in five points and eight rebounds.

Seth Burnham finished with four points and six rebounds.
