Current Ward 3 Alabaster Councilwoman Stacy Rakestraw has qualified to re-run for the spot during the city’s upcoming municipal elections.

Rakestraw has been serving on the City Council  since late May, when she was appointed to fill the Ward 3 seat vacated when former councilman Adam Moseley stepped down to take a spot on the Alabaster Board of Education.

While interviewing for Moseley’s vacant spot, a few months ago, Rakestraw, the children’s director at Evangel Presbyterian Church, said she planned to qualify for the position during the 2012 elections.

“I am enjoying serving as the councilwoman for Ward 3, working with the current City Council and city employees and getting to know so many others that make Alabaster such a great place to live,” Rakestraw said.

If elected, Rakestraw said she would like to continue working on several projects to improve Alabaster’s appearance, community involvement and economy. She previously said she would like to see the city implement an “adopt-an-intersection” program to allow local businesses to adopt and care for certain areas of the city.

Rakestraw also said she would like the city to consider forming its own chamber of commerce to handle the business growth the city has seen over the past several years. Currently, Alabaster businesses participate in the Greater Shelby and South Shelby chambers of commerce.

She said Alabaster should look at possibly marketing itself to surrounding states as a sort of beach rest-stop as the city gets more hotels.

Rakestraw also said she would like to make comment cards available to Alabaster residents to share their ideas with the city.

Alabaster’s municipal elections will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Rakestraw and candidate Les Zemnes have qualified to run for the Ward 3 seat during the election.
