Spain Park High School closed the regular season with a 35-21 win on the road Thursday night at Huntsville.
After a disappointing first half, Spain Park coach David Shores decided to turn back the clock in the second half.
“We spent 90 percent of the second half in the wishbone,” Shores said. “We didn’t move the ball and they were whipping us in the first half. We decided to run right at them.”
The change sparked the Jaguars, who scored three touchdowns and limited Huntsville to 14 total yards in the second half.
“Both the offensive and defensive lines took over in the second half,” Shores said.
Tamar Mickens scored the first touchdown of the game for the Jaguars with his short run in the first quarter.
Daniel Watkins caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Graham Craig in the second quarter.
Josh Drum caught a touchdown pass from Craig and Lee Mitchell rushed for a touchdown in the third quarter as the Jags pushed their lead to 28-21 at the end of the quarter. Jake Lee capped the scoring for Spain Park with a touchdown reception from Craig in the fourth quarter.
The Jags (8-2) will travel to Tuscaloosa County for a first-round matchup in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A playoffs next Friday night.
Shores said he won’t hesitate to run the wishbone if the Jags are in need of another spark at Tuscaloosa County.
“It’s something we can go to if we need it,” Shores said.
