HOOVER — Suzanne Culbreth has gotten her share of honors recently.

In recent months, the Spain Park High School geometry teacher was named the Alabama Teacher of the Year and was awarded the 2011 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The Hoover City Council added more hardware to Culbreth’s trophy case at the July 16 council meeting, awarding her a city proclamation honoring her work. After the proclamation was read, the dozens in attendance rose to give Culbreth a standing ovation.

Before the meeting, Culbreth said she was excited to be honored by the Hoover City Council, adding that she understands the major impact her awards have on the community.

“Anything that’s great for Hoover City Schools is great for Hoover city, so I think it’s fabulous,” she said.

In other actions, the council:

-Approved a conditional use request from a2 church to operate on a 14.65-acre site located at 10 Greenhill Parkway off U.S. 280. The property is currently zoned for community business district use.

-Approved an ordinance to annex property located at 5400 U.S. 280, the site of an existing Shell service station.
