Alabaster will move one step closer to expanding its senior offerings Nov. 14, when city officials break ground on a new 4,500-square-foot senior center.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Old Buck Creek Mill site off 11th Street Southwest.

“Opening this facility will provide a major improvement to the quality of life for our senior citizens,” said Alabaster Mayor David Frings.

When completed, the center, which will be on a 22-acre city-owned plot near the Buck Creek Greenway, will offer indoor and outdoor recreation facilities and a new venue for Alabaster’s senior activities.

The City Council approved a $749,547 bid from Montevallo-based Wayne Davis Construction to complete the project, which will be funded by the city, a Shelby County Health Foundation Grant and a Shelby County Community Center Grant.

Construction should last about eight months, and is scheduled to be completed July 7, 2010.
