High school basketball roundup: Montevallo defeats West Blocton on rededication night

The Montevallo High School girls’ basketball team routed visiting West Blocton 78-48 on the night the school rededicate its gymnasium in honor of former teacher Susie DeMent.

Amber Cardwell led the Bulldogs (5-3) with 25 points in the Dec. 16 victory. Cardwell also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

Mallory Anderson chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds.

DeMent, who was one of the first cheerleaders at the school, spent a career of more than 50 years at Montevallo teaching typing and journalism. DeMent also kept statistics and scorebooks for the Bulldogs’ football, basketball and baseball teams.

DeMent addressed the crowd following the girls’ basketball game.

Shelby County pounds Parkway Christian

The Shelby County High School girls’ basketball team defeated Parkway Christian 53-14 on Dec. 16.

Aulicia Nunn led the Wildcats (10-1) with 14 points.

Kelsie Knight added 10 points. Ashley Mizzell chipped in nine points.

Alexis Lewis contributed eight points. Jasmine Buie finished with six points.

Kingwood Christian defeats Restoration Academy

The Kingwood Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated visiting Restoration Academy 44-29 on Dec. 16.

Whitney Gillespie led the Lions (4-8) with 16 points. Gillespie also grabbed 11 rebounds and recorded five steals.

Casey Whitmer added 14 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

Hope Christian defeats Tabernacle Christian

The Hope Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated Tabernacle Christian 22-13 on Dec. 16.

Davina Drew led the Eagles (6-2) with six points. Drew also recorded a team-high six rebounds and five steals.

Hannah Rettig added five points. Karlee Tate finished with four points. Christina Jones finished with six steals.

BOYS

Thompson defeats Calera

The Thompson High School boys’ basketball team handed visiting Calera its second loss of the season following an 84-77 win over the Eagles on Dec. 16.

Demarcus Threatt led the Warriors (7-5) with a career-high 45 points. Threatt, who nailed six 3-pointers in the victory, finished with a team-high six steals.

Ryan Spence and Ryan Coleman added 10 points each for the Warriors.

Jeremy Hyde led Calera (9-2) with 22 points.

Ronnie Clark chipped in 17 points in the loss.

Shelby County falls to Parkway Christian in overtime

The Shelby County High School boys’ basketball team fell to Parkway Christian 51-49 in overtime Dec. 16.

Ty Lollar, who made eight 3-point field goals in the loss, led the Wildcats (3-6) with 28 points.

Montevallo tops West Blocton

The Montevallo High School boys’ basketball team defeated visiting West Blocton 51-42 on Dec. 16.

Korey Cunningham led the Bulldogs (2-4) with 16 points.

Garrius Chappell added 12 points in the victory.

Vincent defeats Victory Christian in area contest

The Vincent High School boys’ basketball team rebounded from its first area loss with an 81-21 win over Victory Christian in a Class 2A, Area 10 contest Dec. 16.

Bruce Hamilton led the Yellow Jackets (9-3 overall, 3-1 in Class 2A, Area 10) with 17 points. Hamilton also grabbed eight rebounds.

Tyler Williams added 14 points and dished out three assists. Keyon Wallace contributed 13 points and six rebounds in the victory.

Kingwood Christian falls to Restoration Academy

The Kingwood Christian School boys’ basketball team fell to visiting Restoration Academy 58-31 on Dec. 16.

Jordan Myers led the Lions (8-5) with 10 points.

Charles Pope added eight points and eight rebounds.

Hope Christian edges Success Unlimited Academy

The Hope Christian School boys’ basketball team edged Success Unlimited Academy 53-51 on Dec. 16.

Terrance Moore led the Eagles (4-5) with 16 points.

Seth Burnham added 12 points. Blake Thomas chipped in eight points. Benjamin Bunn finished with six points.

Caleb Douglas, who scored two points, recorded a team-high six rebounds and four assists.
