High school basketball roundup: Thompson edges Spain Park

The Thompson High School girls’ basketball team edged Spain Park 56-55 on Dec. 7.
Rachel Lawley led the Warriors (6-3) with 16 points.
Chelsea Taylor, who sealed the win with two free throws with seven seconds remaining, added 14 points. KaDeisha Stowes chipped in 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Colby Ryan led Spain Park (4-4) with 19 points.
Whitney Gulledge and Ashley Gaston added 11 points each. Jessica Freeman chipped in 10 points.
Oak Mountain defeats Tuscaloosa County
The Oak Mountain High School girls’ basketball team defeated Tuscaloosa County 56-28 on Dec. 7.
Lay Watts led the Eagles (6-1) with 25 points. Watts also grabbed four rebounds.
Mackenzie Garmany and M.K. Shealy added eight points each.
Briarwood Christian defeats Sylacauga in area opener
The Briarwood Christian School girls’ basketball team picked up a 72-46 win over Sylacauga in its Class 5A, Area 7 opener Dec. 7.
Anna Handlin and Cara Medders led the Lions (9-3 overall, 1-0 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 14 points each.
Meredith Botes added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Abbie Cutcliffe chipped in 13 points.
Shelby County drops area opener against Talladega
The Shelby County High School girls’ basketball team dropped its first game of the season Dec. 7 following a 51-46 loss to Talladega in the Wildcats’ Class 5A, Area 7 opener.
Alysia Perkins led the Wildcats (7-1 overall, 0-1 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 18 points.
Aulicia Nunn added 13 points. Hallie Brown chipped in six points. Keyanna Gayden contributed five points.
Montevallo defeats Hueytown
The Montevallo High School girls’ basketball team picked up a 54-42 win over Hueytown on Dec. 7.
Amber Cardwell led the Bulldogs (3-1) with 22 points. Cardwell also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Kayla Cunningham added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Indian Springs defeats Clay County in area contest
The Indian Springs School girls’ basketball team defeated Clay County 55-42 in a Class 3A, Area 8 contest Dec. 7.
Andrea Mayo led Indian Springs (4-3 overall, 2-0 in Class 3A, Area 8 ) with a career-high 36 points.
Dabney Hofammann added 10 points.
Leeds tops Vincent
The VIncent High School girls’ basketball team fell to Leeds 45-35 on Dec. 7.
Kiara Cohill led the Yellow Jackets (2-7) with 22 points.
Kingwood Christian defeats Morgan Academy
The Kingwood Christian School girls’ basketball team defeated Morgan Academy 35-19 on Dec. 7.
Whitney Gillespie led the Lions (2-5) with 18 points.
Casey Whitmer added 16 points and blocked four shots. Blair Holsombeck contributed 12 points.
Coosa Valley defeats Ellwood Christian
The Coosa Valley Academy girls’ basketball team defeated Ellwood Christian 72-68 in double overtime Dec. 7.
Jordan Smiley led the Rebels (4-1) with 21 points. Smiley also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Amelia Ripley and Lauren Archer added 18 points each. Archer also grabbed 12 rebounds. Kaylan Rich finished with 11 points and 17 boards.
Evangel Christian tops East Central
The Evangel Christian School girls’ basketball team picked up a 66-23 win over East Central on Dec. 7.
The Lightning (5-0) used a 23-3 run in the second quarter to jump out to a 42-9 halftime lead. Evangel coasted down the stretch to get the win.
Nine different Evangel players scored, led by Katherine Stockman’s game-high 19 points.
Rainey Ketcham added 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Ketcham also contributed six rebounds, six assists and five steals. Abby Letson added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Hope Christian defeats First Assembly
The Hope Christian School girls’ basketball team picked up a 30-18 win over First Assembly Christian on Dec. 7.
Davina Drew and Christina Jones led the Eagles (4-1) with six points each.
Karlee Tate and Rachel Rettig added five points each. Rettig led Hope with four rebounds.

Spain Park defeats Thompson
The Spain Park High School boys’ basketball team picked up a 57-45 win over Thompson on Dec. 7.
Rembert Martin led the Jaguars (6-3) with 21 points.
Mitchell Holt added 13 points. Robby Prater contributed 10 points.
Demarcus Threatt led Thompson (6-3) with 18 points.
Oak Mountain defeats Clay-Chalkville
The Oak Mountain High School boys’ basketball team defeated Clay-Chalkville 50-39 on Dec. 7.
Garrett Cosgrove led the Eagles (4-4) with 19 points.
Colton McGriff added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Briarwood Christian drops area opener against Sylacauga
The Briarwood Christian School boys’ basketball team fell to Sylacauga 78-67 in its Class 5A, Area 7 opener Dec. 7.
Luke Collins led the Lions (7-2 overall, 0-1 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 18 points.
Shelby County drops area opener against Talladega
The Shelby County High School boys’ basketball team fell to Talladega 83-71 in its Class 5A, Area 7 opener Dec. 7.
Tyler Madison led the Wildcats (2-4 overall, 0-1 in Class 5A, Area 7) with 30 points.
Ty Lollar added 22 points.
Indian Springs defeats Clay County
The Indian Springs School boys’ basketball team picked up a 37-34 win over Clay County in a Class 3A, Area 8 contest Dec. 7.
Charlie Simpson led Indian Springs (5-3 overall, 1-1 in Class 3A, Area 8 ) with 11 points.
Vincent defeats Leeds
The Vincent High School boys’ basketball team topped Leeds 65-41 on Dec. 7.
Keyon Wallace led the Yellow Jackets (7-2) with 16 points. Wallace also grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out seven assists and blocked four shots.
Ben McKinney added 12 points and four steals. Anterio Rogers chipped in 11 points and five steals. Bruce Hamilton contributed 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Demauntey Johnson finished with four points, four rebounds, five assists and four steals.
With 5:50 left in the game, Johnson found Wallace for a thunderous dunk on a long inbound pass against the press.
Five seconds later, Wallace made a block on the other end of the floor by pinning the ball against the backboard. Wallace grabbed the rebound and made an outlet pass before getting the ball back to complete a three-point play following a basket and a free throw to halt the comeback attempt by Leeds.
Westminster falls to Oak Grove
The Westminster School at Oak Mountain boys’ basketball team fell to Oak Grove 67-49 on Dec. 7.
Jeffrey Stanford led the Knights (5-4) with 20 points. Stanford also grabbed nine rebounds.
Jake Doggett added 11 points. Adam Gurley contributed 10 points. Richard Robey led Westminster with 11 rebounds.
Kingwood Christian tops Morgan Academy
The Kingwood Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated Morgan Academy 80-76 on Dec. 7.
Madison Webb led the Lions (5-4) with 27 points.
Daniel Fillingim added 15 points and nine rebounds. Charles Pope contributed 14 points and a team-high 10 boards.
Jordan Myers finished with 11 points and five assists.
Evangel Christian defeats East Central
The Evangel Christian School boys’ basketball team defeated East Central 79-48 on Dec. 7.
Mark Underwood led the Lightning (5-0) with 22 points.
Marcus Johnson added 18 points. Dajon Townson chipped in 18 points.
Hope Christian falls to First Assembly
The Hope Christian School boys’ basketball team fell to First Assembly Christian 51-44 on Dec. 7.
Pete Thomason led the Eagles (3-3) with 24 points.
Terrance Moore added eight points. Caleb Douglas chipped in six points. Douglas also finished with a team-high seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.
