VINCENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets took on the Childersburg Tigers in their annual spring scrimmage May 18, winning in a low scoring affair 8-0.

Vincent head coach Zeb Ellison said that he was overall pleased with the physical and gritty play, especially on offense.

“I thought we went and played real physical on offense,” he said. “That is something we aimed for and I wanted to see this spring and it was nice to see them execute.”

Despite only playing for a half, the Yellow Jackets varsity squad put together and impressive stat line on both offense and defense. The Yellow Jackets ran 27 plays for a total of 124 yards on offense with one touchdown led by the one-two punch running back combination of juniors Ryan Kelow and Rodney Groce.

“Our running game stood out the most,” Ellison said. “We wanted to see our two young running backs run the football and they did well but we still have a ways to go.”

On defense, the Yellow Jackets forced a safety adding to their touchdown to cap off their scoring effort.

“I thought we did a great job communicating,” Ellison said. “Getting the right calls out onto the field and the pure physicality shown, especially with our varsity, was great to see.”

As far as improvements go, Ellison said that adding more depth and consistency were the main things that stood out.

“Adding depth is something I want to see going into the fall season,” he said. “But most of all I would like to see more consistency. Sometimes we’d be out there playing well and at other times we’d be stutter stepping so that is something I will definitely address.”
