Lions finish third in state tournament

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf team posted a third-place finish in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A state tournament May 15 at the Robert Trent Jones’ Grand National course after collectively carding a 41-over par 617 in the tournament.
The Lions finished eight strokes behind Class 5A champion Fort Payne, which carded a team score of 33-over par 609.
John Hayden of Briarwood Christian led the Lions with his 5-over par 149, which placed him in a two-way tie for fifth overall in individual standings. Hayden finished nine strokes behind Class 5A individual champion Robby Shelton of St. Paul’s Episcopal.
Trevor Page of Briarwood Christian fired a 7-over par 151, which placed him seventh overall in individual standings. Teammate Banks Nash finished one stroke behind Page in eighth place overall after carding a 8-over par 152.
Brent Gilbert of Briarwood Christian posted a 21-over par 165, which placed him in a two-way tie for 25th overall. Bentley King rounded out the group of Briarwood Christian golfers with his 45-over par 190 and finished 33rd in individual standings.
Tyler Shope of Chelsea, who qualified for the Class 5A state tournament as an individual, carded a 10-over par 154 in the tournament and finished in a two-way tie for 10th overall in individual standings.
