Hornets claim region tournament championship

The Chelsea High School softball team defeated Hueytown 11-1 to claim an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 6A region championship May 12 at Liberty Park.
The Hornets will return to the Class 5A state tournament and will face Scottsboro in its opening game in the tournament May 17 at 10:30 a.m.
Allie Luster, who led the Hornets with a pair of doubles, drove in three runs in the victory.
Amanda Mock finished two two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Caitlin Bice finished with two hits, including a double, and drove in one run. Kacie Craft and Erin Jones, who drove in one run, also finished with two hits.
Alex Osborn, Jo Jo Johnston and Meghan Lanzi added one hit each. Jordan Gray drove in one run in the win.
Bice, who earned the win in the circle, finished with four strikeouts in a complete-game victory.
Chelsea defeated Shelby County 7-6 to reach the region championship game.
Bice, who recorded a pair of doubles, and Amber McCarty, who had one double, led the Hornets with two hits each in the victory.
Mock also finished with a double. Luster and Osborn added one hit each.
McCarty drove in a team-high two runs. Bice and Luster drove in one run each.
Craft, who earned the win in the circle, finished with five strikeouts in four innings. Bice strick out three batters in three innings.
Courtney Shields led the Wildcats with two hits.
Brianna Buie finished with a triple. Brittany Lansford, Kaitlyn Paschall, Victoria Adams and Jessica Carded added one hit each.
Buie drove in a team-high three runs, while Lansford, Shields and Paschall drove in one run each.
Carden, who took the loss, finished with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
The Hornets defeated Hueytown 9-4 in the region tournament May 11.
Luster, Osborn and McCarty each homered in the victory. Mock added a double.
Osborn drove in a team-high three runs, while McCarty and Mock drove in two runs each.
Bice and Craft split time in the circle and struck out two batters each. Bice earned the win after pitching three innings in relief.
Chelsea defeated Greenville 12-2 in its region tournament opener.
Bice led the Hornets at the plate as she finished with a triple and a double in the victory. Luster added three hits, including a triple, and drove in a team-high five runs.
Osborn, who earned the win in the circle, finished with six strikeouts.
