HOOVER — U.S. 280 will soon have a safer traffic system.

During a regularly scheduled meeting May 7, the Hoover City Council passed a resolution authorizing the mayor to sign off on an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to install an adaptive signal control system at 25 intersections along U.S. 280 from Brook Manor to Doug Baker Boulevard.

City Engineer Rodney Long said the system is better because it can actually adjust to the flow of traffic instead of staying in a rigid pattern.

“The system will predict the needs of traffic,” he said. “It’s got more freedom to adjust.”

Long said he expects work on the system to begin in late summer or early fall of this year.

The Hoover City Council also approved an ordinance to rezone property located at 1700 Doug Baker Blvd. from community business district to planned residential development district.

The rezoning will allow that land to be developed into 28 garden home lots.
