CHELSEA — The Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Chelsea will be dedicated as part of the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register Nov. 20.

Norma Jean Howell, who has worked to restore the cemetery, said the church will open at 10 a.m. and have visitation until 11:30 a.m. There will be a singing until noon and lunch will be served on church grounds. All attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to share for lunch.

A marker will be dedicated at 2 p.m. with several guest speakers to follow.

Howell said she’s helping to preserve the church and cemetery because of her family connections. Many of her ancestors are buried in the cemetery.

“Really, it just means a whole lot. I’m not doing it for me, I’m doing it for the people up there who have gone on before me,” Howell said. “It means a lot to me, especially for my family and my ancestors.”

The church was started in 1856 and rebuilt in 1901. It is located on County Road 74 in Chelsea. For more information, call Howell at 663-0729.
