University of Montevallo sophomore Will Fulmer broke the Peach Belt Conference record for hits in a season for conference games only April 21 following his hit in the Falcons’ 9-6 loss on the road at Georgia Southwestern State University.

Fulmer, who has 52 hits this conference season, was just 1-for-5 in the loss, which allowed the Hurricanes to take the three-game conference series.

Montevallo (23-23 overall, 16-14 in Peach Belt Conference) was led by junior Austin Dubberly, a Pelham High School graduate, who was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a walk and a double.

Senior Kirk Waligora was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Chris Ross, a Pelham High School graduate, was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.

Sophomore Alex Guilford took the mound for the Falcons and went 4.1 innings with a strikeout. He allowed eight hits and six runs during his outing.

Junior Kameron Heiser pitched the next 3.0 innings with a strikeout and a pair of walks. He allowed four hits and two runs and was credited with the loss as his record fell to 3-5 on the season.

Senior Wes Rich, a Pelham High School graduate, pitched the final 0.2 of an inning with two hits given up and a run.

The Falcons fell victim to three, three-run innings during the game. On all three occasions the Hurricanes loaded the bases and were able to get either a bases clearing double or triple in all three situations to score their nine runs.

Georgia Southwestern State struck first in the second with a bases clearing triple that put the Hurricanes ahead 3-0. Montevallo got on the board in the fourth as senior Blaine Rosenberg drove in freshman Zack Willoughby on a groundout. Willoughby had reached on a one-out single to centerfield.

Montevallo tied the game up in the fifth as senior Heath Peterson hit an RBI double down the left field line to score junior Vincente Andrews, who had reached on a walk. Then Ross hit a triple to right centerfield to score Peterson and tie the game at three.

The Hurricanes answered with a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth. Montevallo scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Dubberly scored on a wild pitch and then Rosenberg was brought home by a single from Waligora to cut the lead to 6-5.

Montevallo tied the game in the eighth as Dubberly once again scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at six. The Hurricanes answered with a bases clearing double in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-6 lead.

After a strikeout to open the ninth the Falcons drew a hit by pitch and a walk to bring the tying run to the plate but a strikeout and a ground out ended the Falcons chances as they fell 9-6.
