The Alabaster Board of Education likely will meet the second Monday of every month at 6 p.m., board members said during an April 11 work session at the Alabaster Senior Center.

During the work session, which was the school board’s first since its members were sworn in about two weeks ago, the board discussed its regular meeting schedule and announced it likely will appoint a board president and vice president during its April 16 meeting.

The April 16 meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Alabaster Senior Center.

In addition to its meetings every second Monday of the month, the board likely will also have a few work sessions a month, board members said. By law, the school board can only vote on matters during regular meetings.

“I think you will have to have a (work session) at least once every two weeks, if not more,” said Whit Colvin, an attorney who was hired to represent the city during its separation with the Shelby County School System.

During the work session, the board also discussed possibly setting up an appointment with David Smith, the executive director of the Alabama Association of School Business Officials.

During the meeting with Smith, school board members will discuss the Alabaster school district’s finances before beginning its search for a superintendent and deciding when the city will finalize its split from the county school system.

“I think that (meeting) will drive a lot of other discussions, like the separation timetables and the superintendent selection,” Colvin said.

Colvin also will work to compile a list of things the school board members must do to comply with state law, such as attending the Alabama Association of School Boards’ new member orientation.

School Board members include Linda Church, John Myrick, Melanie Shores, Ty Quarles and Adam Moseley.

Alabaster likely will finalize its split from the Shelby County School System in July 2013 or July 2014.
