Calera’s volunteer group Acts of Kindness will be hosting their first spring clothing giveaway at the Calera Community Center on March 6. AOK has hosted four annual winter clothing drives that have provided warm coats and other winter attire for members of the community who couldn’t otherwise afford them.
Event organizer Rebecca Krueger said in October 2009, almost 600 people received clothes from the drive. This year AOK is collecting spring and summer clothes from now until March 5 to be ready for distribution March 6.
Clean, gently worn springtime and summer clothes of all sizes are needed. Infant and men’s clothing are especially in high demand.
The donated clothes will be sized and organized into men’s, women’s, and children’s sections for easy perusal.
Krueger said this clothing drive is a chance for people in Shelby County to help out their neighbors in need.
“We recognize that anyone can be affected by hard times, especially in this economy,” she said.
Krueger also said volunteers are needed to spread the word about the clothing drive as well as organize for the event.
A meeting for interested volunteers will be held Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Calera Library meeting room.
To donate your used springtime clothes, bring them to the Calera Community Center on U.S. 31 South from 8 a.m.- 7 p.m. on March 4 and 5.
