Senior guards D.J. Rivera and Antoine Davis of the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team were awarded postseason honors Feb. 28 by the Peach Belt Conference.
Rivera was one of five players named first team All-Conference, while Davis was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Rivera leads the conference in scoring with 22.3 points per game and steals with 2.7 per game. He currently ranks in the top five in scoring in the NCAA and top 10 in steals. He has scored in double figures in all but one game in a Montevallo uniform and has 18 20-plus point performances this season.
Rivera recently broke the Montevallo NCAA record for free throws made in a game with 14 and free-throw percentage in a game by going 14-of-14 from the charity stripe.
Davis missed a large portion of the season due to injury, but still managed to rank second in the conference in steals per game while scoring 13.2 points per game.
Davis started in the last 12 conference games and averaged 4.9 assists per game in league play. A tenacious defender, he led the Falcons in rebounding on several occasions despite being the shortest player on the floor, currently averaging 4.9 rebounds per game. He became the first Montevallo player to be named the Defensive Player of the Year in the three-year history of the award.
The Falcons travel to Columbus, Ga. on Friday to open up the 2012 Peach Belt Conference tournament as they face the No. 4 seed from the East Division, UNC-Pembroke. The game is set for noon central.
