Calera falls in sub-regional game at Midfield

The Calera High School boys’ basketball team fell 86-71 to Midfield in a Class 4A sub-regional contest in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs Feb. 13.
Deondre Haynes and Blayne Sumrall led Calera (14-16) with 20 points each. Ronnie Clark added 14 points, including 10 points in the first half. Jeremy Hyde chipped in seven points and Travis Green finished with six points.
The Eagles struggled early with Midfield’s full-court pressure. Midfield started the game with an 8-4 run and extended its lead to 24-14 late in the first quarter.
Clark cut the Midfield lead to 24-18 with his buzzer-beating basket at the end of the first quarter.
Clark and Channing Mitchell each missed two free throws early in the second quarter, which allowed Midfield to extend its lead to 35-20 midway through the quarter. Haynes hit two free throws with 3:02 left in the first half to cut the Patriots’ lead to 35-27, but Midfield took control late in the second quarter and pushed its lead to 43-32 heading into the locker room at halftime.
The two teams traded baskets early in the third quarter before Midfield to 62-46 late in the quarter. The Eagles made one final push with a 11-2 run, which featured a 3-pointer by Haynes and back-to-back baskets by Sumrall, early in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 66-59.
Midfield quickly pushed its lead back to 70-59 and Calera couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.
