The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped its third-straight game to Delta State University 20-4 in the final game of a three-game series Feb. 12 in non-conference action.
The Falcons (2-5) fell behind early and were never able to get back in the game as the Statesmen rolled to a convincing victory.
Montevallo was led by sophomore Alec Stiver, who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Zach Willoughby and junior Austin Dubberly, a Pelham High School graduate, each had doubles in the game while Stiver, senior Heath Peterson, freshman Cody White and senior Blaine Rosenberg, an Oak Mountain High School graduate, all delivered RBIs.
Junior pitcher Kameron Heiser got the start and took home the loss as his record fell to 0-2 on the season. He pitched one inning with a strikeout and a pair of walks while allowing six runs.
The Statesmen scored two runs in the first inning and then exploded for seven runs in the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead. They tacked on two more runs in the third before being held scoreless in the fourth.
The Falcons finally got on the board in the fourth inning as Rosenberg led off with a single through the right side. Stiver then hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Rosenberg. Willoughby sent a fly ball to right field, which moved Stiver to third before he was brought home by an RBI grounder from White.
The Statesmen responded with two more runs in the fifth. Montevallo tacked on two more in the bottom half as Peterson hit an RBI triple to right centerfield and then was brought home by an RBI groundout from Rosenberg.
The Statesmen again answered the Falcons runs with five runs in the sixth. Delta State tacked on two more in the eighth to take a 20-4 lead, which would be the final score just one inning later.
The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. as they travel to the University of North Alabama.
