Phillip Baer

Well known Calera businessman Phillip Baer, age 60, died unexpectedly Sept. 14, 2008.
Mr. Baer was the owner of Baer’s Department Store, the oldest continuous business in one location in Shelby County and one of the oldest in the state.
The business was started by Mr. Baer’s grandfather in 1898 on his arrival to America from Europe.
Mr. Baer was a 1966 graduate of Calera High School and was in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Sadie Baer.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Baer; brother, Howard Baer; special friend, James D. Glass; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were Sept. 17, 2008, at Elmwood Cemetery.
The family suggests any memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. or a charity of your choice.
