Calera Mayor George Roy was elected by his municipal colleagues from throughout the state to serve as president of the Alabama League of Municipalities for 2002-03.

He was elected and took office during the final day of the league’s annual convention, which was held in Mobile April 13-16.

The league is made up of more than 437 municipalities across the state and serves to promote understanding of municipal government and administration to its members.

Roy had served as league vice-chairman for the 2001-02 term.

He was cheered at last Tuesday’s presentation by a large group of Calera city officials and residents who made the trip to Mobile.

League Executive Director Perry Roquemore said he looks forward to working with Roy during the next year.

&uot;George has been actively involved with the league for many years,&uot; Roquemore said.

&uot;His municipal knowledge and leadership skills have been an asset to our organization, and he will serve us well as president.&uot;

In addition to Roy’s term as vice-chair, he has served on the league’s Executive Committee as well as several other committees and has attended numerous league workshops and training sessions.

Roquemore said Roy has also completed the league’s Basic and Advanced Certified Municipal Officials (CMO) programs.

The CMO programs are designed to train municipal officials in such subjects as council meeting procedures, ordinance drafting, duties of the mayor and council and leadership development.

Roy said he was thankful to be elected.

&uot;This is quite an honor for me and the city of Calera,&uot; Roy said.

&uot;A lot of people deserve it, but very few get it. I was just fortunate to be presented with the opportunity.&uot;
