Donna Morris, who recently lost her bid for re-election to the Shelby County Board of Education, tendered her resignation at last Thursday night’s board meeting.

Morris, who was defeated by Peg Hill, resigned effective July 31.

She suggested that the board appoint Hill to serve the remainder of her term.

Morris also pledged the $325 remaining in her campaign funds to the Johnny Lowe Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Lowe, a resident of Columbiana and a business, community and civic leader, died June 6 at the age of 69.

In her letter of resignation, which she read aloud to the board, Morris said, &uot;I have other interests that require more of my time now, and I plan to do some traveling with my family.&uot;

However, she said, &uot;This is a critical time of year for our school board when we are formulating a budget for the upcoming year as well as making important personnel decisions.

&uot;I would like to suggest that the board appoint Peg Hill to fill the remainder of my term.&uot;

Morris expressed her appreciation for being allowed to serve on the school board.

&uot;It has been my privilege and my pleasure to have served the children and the citizens of Shelby County for these past 18 years. Every vote I have made has been carefully considered for its financial as well as its human impact.

&uot;My bottom line for determination of an issue has always been what was in the best interest for the children that we serve. I can truthfully say I leave with a clear conscience.

&uot;It has been an honor to work with the many fine professionals who staff our central office and our schools. I wish you all well in your future endeavors. I shall always be a strong advocate for public education and especially for Shelby County Schools.&uot;

The board took no action on Morris’ request to appoint Hill last Thursday.

However, the board’s next regular meeting is set for

Aug. 8 and the board is expected to take action at that time
