Panthers face tough foe in first 6A round

The Pelham Panthers will try to regroup following a 41-14 loss to No. 3-ranked Mountain Brook (10-0) last Friday night as they prepare for the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
The Panthers will travel to Tuscaloosa County to face a team which knocked off 6A powerhouse Hoover earlier in the year.
Tuscaloosa has since lost three games after previously being ranked No. 1 in the state.
The No. 10-ranked Wildcats lost 21-10 to unranked Jeff Davis last Friday night.
Mountain Brook got on the board first last Friday night, returning a fumble 15 yards for the score. The PAT failed, but the Panthers were in the hole early 6-0.
Pelham answered when Chris Vines hit Montez Billings on a pass and Billings raced 97 yards for the score. Rob Warren added the extra point, giving Pelham a 7-6 lead.
From there, it was all Mountain Brook.
The Spartans regained the lead when Greer Barnett scored on an 11-yard reception from Grant Osborn. Osborn completed the 2-point conversion pass to Patrick Sprague to give Mountain Brook a 14-7 lead.
Hunter Twitty returned a Vines pass 40 yards for the Spartans next score. Hunter Kimbrough knocked home the PAT to give Mountain Brook a 21-7 lead.
The Sprague-Osborn connection hit the Panthers again, this time for an 18-yard score. Kimbrough’s kick gave the Spartans a 28-7 lead.
Sprague scored his second touchdown of the night when Sam Norton connected with him from 43 yards out. After the failed kick, Mountain Brook had a comfortable 34-7 lead.
The Spartans got their final score of the night when Tribble Reese found the end zone from 1 yard out. Kimbrough’s kick gave Mountain Brook a 41-7 lead.
The Panthers got their final score of the night when Russ Ballard caught a 9-yard scoring strike from Chase Armstrong. Warren’s kick made the final score 41-14.
The Panthers accumulated 273 yards on the night &045; 133 on the ground and 140 in the air. Two Pelham quarterbacks combined for 5-of-16 passing with 3 interceptions
