Columbiana City Councilman Tim Billingsley has been called to active duty.

It was reported at the Tuesday, March 18 meeting of Columbiana City Council that

Billingsley has become the second member of that local government body called to active duty.

Billingsley is a member of the Coast Guard Reserve and works as a Shelby County

sheriff’s deputy.

He previously stated that while he could be called to active duty at any time, his mission is homeland security.

Mayor Tom Seale, who is serving in the absence of Mayor Allan Lowe, who was earlier called to active duty, said there is no need to replace Billingsley on the council and that no action was taken.

He said in the case of Lowe’s temporary replacement, however, there are certain functions that only the mayor can perform.

Seale reported that progress continues on the city’s multi-use building that will contain Boy and Girl Scout meeting rooms, a multipurpose room, a senior citizen’s suite, kitchen and restrooms.

In routine business, the council:

Approved the release of $4,565 to Dowdy & Associates and $3,642 to Silvers Sales Inc. for sewer maintenance expense.

Approved a bid of $46,000 for weather sirens.

Approved a bid of $260,713 to Gilco Contracting company for ultra violet (UV) disinfection at the sewer treatment plant.

Approved the release of funds to Wise Engineering Inc. in the amount of $25,326 for the ultra violet sewer disinfection design and 9.714 percent of the construction bid and

$1,606 for professional consultant services.

Approved the release of funds to Lighting & Lamp in amounts of $268 and $234 for Park and Recreation Board
