Fred Collins Blackmon, 87, of Clanton died on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011. Born in Birmingham on Dec. 16, 1923, Mr. Blackmon graduated from the University of Michigan and the University of Alabama. He was a professor of mathematics and physics at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo for 20 years. Mr. Blackmon served with distinction in World War II and the Korean War. A dedicated teacher and champion golfer, Mr. Blackmon touched the lives of many.
Mr. Blackmon is survived by his wife, Charlotte Durham Blackmon of Clanton and Austin, Texas; daughter Mary Collins Blackmon of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Marshall Erin Emerson of Denver, Colo., Adrienne LaCoste Emerson of Pensacola, Fla., and Jake Devin Emerson of Tampa, Fla.; and four great grandchildren.
Mr. Blackmon is preceded in death by his parents, Timothy Edward and Arsula Collins Blackmon; his brother, Timothy Edward Blackmon Jr.; and his daughter, Charlotte Anne Blackmon Emerson.
Services will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Clanton on Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. with the service at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Chilton Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of choice, and that Mr. Blackmon be remembered in prayers.
