CCS WEIGHTLIFTERS PLACE AT MEET

Two weightlifters from Cornerstone Christian School in Columbiana placed in the West Alabama Open Powerlifting Championship at Pickens Academy in Carrolton. The meet was open to public and private schools all over Alabama. The meet had 8 different weight classes for boys and one class for girls. Josh Criswell, an 8th grader at CCS won first place in the 114-pound weight class, winning all three events as well as the overall in the meet. Tyler &uot;Snickers&uot; Enders, an eleventh grader at CCS won third place in the 240-pound class.

LOCAL GOLFER GETS HOLE IN ONE

Charles Tidwell recently got a hole-in-one at Magnolia Meadows golf course in Columbiana.

Using a pitching wedge, Tidwell rang the cup with a 110-yard shot on hole No. 13. Dave Ellison and Welby Rasco served as witnesses.

UM HIRES CROSS-COUNTRY COACH

Michael Marquardt has been named the head coach of the University of Montevallo women’s cross-country program.

The newest intercollegiate athletic program, it will become the 10th varsity program at Montevallo, with the inaugural competitive season beginning this fall.

Marquardt was the assistant cross-country coach at nearby Birmingham-Southern College for one season, assisting with both the men’s and women’s cross-country programs.

He concurrently works as the aquatics manager at Sports First in Birmingham, with duties in scheduling and instruction.

A graduate of Birmingham-Southern College, Marquardt was a two-year letter-winner for the Panthers, qualified for the 2001 NAIA Outdoor Track National Championships, named team captain, and was named Academic All-Big South Conference in 2001. He earned his bachelor’s degree in History with a minor in Sociology from BSC in 2002.

Prior to BSC, Marquardt was a two-year letter-winner at Bevill State Community College in Hamilton, named Academic All-American in 2000 and was part of teams that qualified for the NJCAA National Championships in 1998 and 1999.

Marquardt resides in Birmingham.

LOCAL FENCERS PLACE AT TOURNEY

Several Shelby County residents participated in fencing competitions at the Super Regional Youth Circuit Event held in Houston in January. Super Regional Youth Circuit tournaments were designed to bring fencers together from a wider geographic area. The SRYCs also provide an opportunity to earn fractional national points. National points establish rankings among competitive fencers in the U.S. SRYCs also provide another way to qualify for competition in North American Cup tournaments. The recent SRYC tournament in Houston included 452 entries from around the country.
