Three non-profit agencies in Shelby County applied for a grant renewal this week in a resolution approved by the Shelby County Commission.

Shelby Emergency Assistance Inc., Safe House and Family Connection will split the grant evenly, said Reggie Holloway, manager of community services for the county.

Holloway said the county will apply for the maximum possible amount of money from the grant, $200,000.

The grant is administered by the Department of Economic and Community Affairs in Montgomery.

Holloway said the county received the entire $200,000 amount for 2003, and almost that same amount in 2002.

Each agency must match the amount of money received from the grant with money, in-kind donations or volunteer hours, Holloway said.

The money will be used to operate the three county agencies throughout the year, including two shelters for Safe House and Family Connection.

Safe House provides care for domestic violence victims, some of whom end up without homes, Holloway said.

Family Connection focuses on runaway youth with no homes.

Shelby Emergency Assistance Inc. provides financial assistance during crisis situations such as fire or tornadoes.

&uot;It’s to help that person get back on their feet,&uot; Holloway said.

Individuals must provide documentation of their need for services, Holloway said.
