Geoff Walters, head football coach and athletic director at Shelby County High School, tendered his resignation Monday, announcing his intention to accept a position at Sylacauga High School.

Walters will remain at the school until March 31, when he will take over the position at Sylacauga, according to Shelby County principal Bill Gibson.

Under Walters’ guidance, the Wildcats finished the 2003 season with a 9-3 record, earning their second-straight Class 4A, Region 5 championship.

SCHS made it to the third round of the playoffs before falling to Boaz.

&uot;That was quite an accomplishment for our school,&uot; Gibson said.

&uot;(Walters) is an outstanding individual. He has done a tremendous job of changing some things at Shelby County in athletics. He will be dearly missed.&uot;

Gibson said the search for a replacement began immediately and that the school has already posted advertisements for the head football coach and athletic director positions on the Alabama High School Athletic Association website.

&uot;We are going to meet with booster groups and people in the community to talk about their concerns,&uot; he said.

Gibson said he hopes to have the position filled by early April and that a new coach could be hired in time to conduct football spring training.

&uot;We look forward to bringing in someone who will be just as exciting for Shelby County High School,&uot; Gibson said.
