WILTON – The people of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Wilton lifted up a joyful noise in celebration of their church’s 100th year anniversary on Dec. 4.

The church was founded in 1911 in the community of Wilton.

“The church was organized by a small group of devout and dedicated Christians,” said Sister Teresa Burden as she shared a brief history of the church.

When the current pastor, Reverend A.L. Jones, became the pastor, membership increased and all outstanding debt was liquidated, Burden said. In December of 1998, the church became incorporated.

“We continue giving honor to God, and I pray we continue to grow,” she said.

As a part of the centennial celebration, a memorial candle was lit to remember those who passed away during the past years. Reverend Van C. Houser, pastor of New Vision Christian Church in Helena, presented the sermon and the benediction.

On Dec. 25, 1968, the church building burned, but the congregation rebuilt and continues serving the community of Wilton from the current facility on Depot Street past Town Hall.

“I appreciate all this church has done for my family and our community,” Wilton Town Clerk April Price said to the congregation and Reverend Jones. She then presented the church with a declaration from the town of Wilton concerning the centennial celebration.

“This church has blessed our town,” she said.
