Harpersville lost its eldest resident March 31, as the owner of the city’s Old Baker Farms died at the age of 101.

Earl Baker died early March 31, about two hours after his dog, Joe Brown, who was his faithful companion, also died just outside Baker’s window, said Harpersville Mayor Theoangelo Perkins.

“It’s a huge loss for the city. He was a staple in the community,” Perkins said. “He could really tell some stories about Shelby County. We are all going to miss him.”

Baker was known throughout the county as an avid Auburn fan and “knew everyone in the community,” Perkins said.

“Last summer, you could see him out on the highway selling corn,” Perkins said. “We were close friends, and he had a sharp memory up until the end.

“I actually didn’t know my great-grandfather, and Mr. Baker actually used to play chess and checkers with him,” Perkins said. “He taught me a lot about Harpersville and my own family.”

Baker’s house has been in Harpersville for more than 150 years, and his farm is “older than Shelby County,” Perkins said.

“He knew everyone in Harpersville, and everyone knew him,” Perkins said. “I have known him my entire life, and I am going to miss him.”
