The University of Montevallo interviewed its first candidate to replace departed athletic director Mike Cancilla Friday, said Cynthia Shackelford, director of public relations.

Interviews will be held &uot;shortly&uot; for at least three other candidates, Shackelford said.

Cancilla, who spent five years as Montevallo’s athletic director, resigned in early April.

&uot;Work of the search committee for the athletic director’s position is progressing well as members continue to review credentials of applicants,&uot; Shackelford said. &uot;The position was advertised nationally and has drawn a sizeable number of candidates.

&uot;I expect the committee will be continuing their work for the remainder of the summer.&uot;

Duties for the full-time position include oversight of each of the school’s 10 intercollegiate athletic programs including baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s cross-country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball
