Governor to speak at Veteran’s Day program

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley will be in Columbiana Sunday for the annual Veterans Day Remembrance.
The ceremony is set for Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. on the lawn of the Shelby County Courthouse.
The event is being sponsored by the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber director Stacy Walkup said a special invitation is being extended to local veterans and their families.
She said she was excited about the governor’s visit as the Columbiana veteran’s event was one of only a few which he would be able to attend.
Also on the program will be Shelby County resident and Alabama State Auditor Beth Chapman.
Strings &8216;N’ Things will provide music before and after the program.
Paula Head will sing the National Anthem and &8220;How Great Thou Art.&8221;
Junior ROTC members from Shelby County High School and Vincent High School will present the colors at the event while Boy Scout Troop 560 of Columbiana will raise the flag and Girl Scout Troop 169 will distribute programs.
Following the program, children in attendance are invited to meet the governor for a photo on the steps of the Columbiana United Methodist Church.
The South Shelby Chamber makes an effort every year to honor local veterans.
The Veterans Day Remembrance event, in fact, on Nov. 6 will be held beside Shelby County’s veterans’ monument.
The monument was dedicated in 1954 to honor those in Shelby County who have given their lives serving in the U.S. armed forces during World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
