Spain Park wrestlers excel at duals

Spain Park went undefeated in the first evening of the Benjamin-Russell Duals in Alexander City on Dec. 2-3.
The Jags defeated Jefferson Davis, 45-27; Piedmont, 52-24, and Auburn High School, 38-33.
Undefeated wrestlers for the Jags included Will Gurley (103) and Chris Goodwin (140), each with three pins; Matt Noto (215) with two pins; Ryan Pugh (275) with two pins and one decision; Andrew Noto with one fall, one major decision and one forfeit; and Brandon Neal (130) with one decision and two forfeits.
The Spain Park Jaguars continued to improve on their Friday evening performance on Saturday.
The team finished first in its pool with a 54-21 defeat of Smiths Station. Their next match in cross-pool play was with host Benjamin-Russell.
Going into the final match, the Jags were trailing 39-33 when sophomore Wes Watkins (135) pinned Anthony Withers of Benjamin-Russell to tie the team score at 39-39.
Spain Park won the team victory on tie-breaker criteria.
Unfortunately, in the last match of the afternoon, the Jaguars lost to Bremen (Ga.) High School, 63 -12.
Chris Goodwin (140) and Ryan Pugh (275) continued to be undefeated with six wins each for the tournament.
Goodwin had five pins and one technical fall, and Pugh had two pins, two decisions, and two forfeits. At 189 pounds Andrew Noto improved to 5-1 for the tournament with three falls, one major decision and one forfeit. Also improving to four wins were Will Gurley (103), Heath Lucas (145) and Noto (215).
