First Baptist Church of Calera was founded in 1875 and was originally named Bethel Baptist Church. It was renamed in 1885. Currently, about 120 members attend the church.
First Baptist is pastored by Frederick Joe Perry Sr., who is a current resident of Birmingham.
Perry is a former church member of St. Luke Baptist Church and a present member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
He received his education from Birmingham Easonian Bible College.
First Baptist currently offers Sunday school and worship services along with a Bible study on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.
When asked what the church’s role in society was, Perry said it was all about showing people the way.
&8220;Our purpose is to win the lost to Christ,&8221; Perry said. &8220;We are to be a beacon of light to society,&8221;
Perry said his church focuses on ministering to the surrounding area through everyday support efforts.
&8220;When someone is in need, we want to be there to meet that need,&8221; he said. &8220;Whether it is with food, clothing or something else, we want to do our part.&8221;
