HOOVER — The Hoover City Council recently selected Derrick Murphy, a project engineer with the Birmingham Water Works Board, to fill an empty seat on the Hoover Board of Education.

Murphy was selected at the regularly scheduled Hoover City Council meeting Nov. 7, according to Lori Salter with the mayor’s office.

Murphy, who was one of seven applicants for the empty seat, is a board member of the Hoover Board of Zoning Adjustment. He also spends time working with Vineyard Family Services, the Mountaintop Community Church Passion Ministry, Birmingham City Schools and the Simmons Middle School Minority Achievement Council.

In his application, Murphy wrote he is “committed to work alongside other board members, parents and members of our community towards a goal to help provide the best education and opportunity available to compete in this global work economy.”

Murphy has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s in construction management from UAB. He played football while at UAB.

Murphy takes over for Dr. Ronald Braswell, who vacated his seat Oct. 1.
