State Sen. J.T. &8220;Jabo&8221; Waggoner accepted $88,800 in cash contributions in 2005 &8212; more than any other state legislator representing Shelby County residents, according to public records.

Waggoner, who represents District 16, also ranked as the year&8217;s biggest spender of campaign monies.

His $42,095.97 spent in 2005 was tops among Shelby County&8217;s representation in Montgomery.

All nine of Shelby County&8217;s state delegates &8212; three senators and six representatives &8212; reported their campaign contributions and expenditures for 2005 in January, in accordance with the Alabama Fair Campaign Practices Act.

The annual reports are dominated by contributions from political action committees, such as the Alabama Power Company Employees State PAC and the Alabama Realtors PAC, each donating in excess of $10,000 to Shelby County legislators.

Sen. Henry E. &8220;Hank&8221; Erwin Jr.&8217;s $10,000 donation from Brent landowner Alan Belcher was the largest single contribution reported by a Shelby County delegate.

A $6,762.35 payment to a Virginia company from Sen. Steve French for advertising was the single largest expenditure reported.

Erwin was also a big advertising spender with billboard rental accounting for more than a quarter of his total expenses.

He also spent more than a $1,000 on newspaper advertising and $800 on his WOTM television show, according to his report.

State Rep. Jim McClendon raised more than $60,000 last year, but spent less than $6,000.

Mike Hill spent more than any other Shelby County representative at $29,206.51, including a reported $1,490 food purchase at Bernie&8217;s Grill in Columbiana, a $1,290.76 administrative purchase at Best Buy and a $1,000 contribution to the Committee to Elect Beth Chapman.
