It&8217;s the usual way of doing things.

At first, everyone is excited. Everyone is talking. There&8217;s petitions to sign, letters to write and crowds swell at public meetings.

But at some point, the excitement dies down and the issues are all but forgotten.

Let&8217;s hope that will not be the case in the city of Montevallo.

Montevallo has been working with a private consultant on a comprehensive plan. But since a recent uproar over growth, seen as uncontrolled by many citizens, the city is now seeking public input and more professional help.

have a chance to be heard on this issue.

At the first public meeting held to update Montevallo&8217;s Comprehensive Plan on Feb. 9, there was a tremendous turnout.

But at the second of three meetings, held on Feb. 23, it appeared that there was a significant decrease in participation.

If things continue along the expected path, the city&8217;s next comprehensive plan meeting on March 9 will host an even smaller group of concerned citizens coming to see the results of their input.

A comprehensive plan will be ironed out with a whimper instead of a roar.

The people of Montevallo need to take advantage of this opportunity to shape the future growth of their city, to come up with a plan that will protect the historic character of their community and the small-town atmosphere around one of the most beautiful college campuses in the South.
